49ers Fullback Kyle Juszczyk Makes Swift Recovery, Cleared to Play After Knee Injury
Just two weeks after a potentially season-ending injury, the 10-time Pro Bowler is back on the field for Monday night's game.
San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk has been cleared to play in Monday night's game against the Commanders, marking a remarkable recovery just two weeks after sustaining a knee injury that initially appeared severe.
At the time of the injury, which involved a brutal tackle that hyperextended his knee, Juszczyk's ailment was feared to be a season-ending one. Even after further tests provided encouraging results, the team had anticipated being without the veteran player until after their bye week.
However, Juszczyk, a 33-year-old 10-time Pro Bowler, will miss only a single game. "It looked bad in the beginning, and they said they thought it would be three weeks," coach Kyle Shanahan said Saturday. "Juice has always been fast any time he’s been hurt, but this is real impressive."
The 49ers will be without several other key players for the matchup. Defensive end Nick Bosa will miss his fourth consecutive game due to a calf strain, despite earlier expressing confidence about his return. "We would’ve been pleasantly surprised if he could go this week," Shanahan commented. "We were pleasantly surprised that he was that optimistic last week, but we still would’ve been surprised. This is kind of what we were expecting. There was a chance. He wasn’t wrong and I think he felt that way, but we’re gonna make sure he’s fully good and another week will help."
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel and linebacker Garret Wallow were both ruled out with hamstring strains. Safety Marques Sigle will also miss his second straight game with an ankle injury.
Samuel's absence leaves the 49ers with only three healthy wide receivers: Brandin Cooks, Jordan Watkins, and Jacob Cowing, with Mike Evans listed as questionable. Evans missed practice this week due to ribs he broke three weeks prior and Achilles soreness, though he played in the previous game after missing practice. "We’ll know on Monday," Shanahan said regarding Evans' status.
Adding to the uncertainty at receiver, Christian Kirk, a free agent signee, had his practice window opened this week and was listed as questionable. Shanahan indicated that Kirk could "possibly" be activated for Monday night's game.
On the defensive side, defensive end Mykel Williams, who returned last week after a lengthy absence, is questionable. Defensive tackle Gracen Halton (quad), nickelback Upton Stout (shoulder), and special teamer Siran Neal (neck) are also listed as questionable.
The Commanders will be without their leading rusher, Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who has accumulated 239 rushing yards and two touchdowns this season. He is sidelined with a strained groin that prevented him from practicing all week.
Washington is expected to see the return of top cornerback Trey Amos. The player has been on injured reserve but fully participated in practice and is expected to be activated, though he is officially listed as questionable.
