49ers Facing Receiver Crisis Amidst Multiple Injuries
San Francisco's receiving corps is depleted, prompting coach Kyle Shanahan to consider adding a new player this week.
The San Francisco 49ers are grappling with a significant shortage at wide receiver, exacerbated by multiple injuries to key players. Demarcus Robinson sprained his ankle in the first half of the team's 35-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins, and coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the injury will likely sideline him for several weeks.
This latest setback adds to a growing list of unavailable receivers. Rookie De’Zhaun Stribling and tight end Jake Tonges were lost in Week 1, and Ricky Pearsall has been out since undergoing season-ending surgery. By the end of Sunday's game, San Francisco was left with only three active, healthy receivers: Deebo Samuel, Jacob Cowing, and KhaDarel Hodge. Mike Evans also departed with a hip issue but is not considered a major concern.
"If the game was different, he would’ve been able to come back in," Shanahan said of Evans. However, Robinson's high ankle sprain typically requires weeks of recovery. Prior to his injury, Robinson had emerged as one of Brock Purdy's trusted targets, accumulating 84 yards and a touchdown in the game and a half he played.
Stribling underwent surgery for an ankle ligament sprain and is expected to miss approximately 10 weeks. Tonges tore his MCL and will miss the remainder of the season, as will Pearsall, who has experienced injury issues since his 2024 draft year.
"It sucks because those are my guys and those are our playmakers and for them to go down early in the season like that is tough," Purdy commented on the situation.
Despite the depleted receiving unit, the 49ers offense, led by Purdy, demonstrated effectiveness against the Dolphins. However, the team acknowledges the need for reinforcements.
"I’m sure we’ll have to add somebody, whether it’s the practice squad or to the roster," Shanahan stated. "Hopefully, we’ll have an answer by Wednesday." Free agent addition Christian Kirk is not eligible to play until Week 5, and Jordan Watkins was inactive for the Dolphins game despite the existing absences.
Former 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk is not being considered as a potential returnee, as his salary was voided and he remains on the reserve/left squad list without any indication of seeking reinstatement. The team also has the option of exploring free agents like Tyreek Hill, Darius Slayton, or Brandin Cooks, or potentially making a trade, though Shanahan often prioritizes players familiar with the team's system. Players such as Malik Turner, Trenton Irwin, Ray-Ray McCloud, and River Cracraft, who have prior ties to the organization, are also available on the market.
