49ers Face Growing Roster Dilemma Amidst Rising Injuries

The San Francisco 49ers are grappling with an escalating injury situation early in the season, presenting a complex roster management challenge. Head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged the difficulty, stating, “There’s a lot of variables there. It’s complicated, and we’ve got to guess.”

Unlike previous seasons where injuries often impacted key starters, the current wave of injuries is affecting players deeper on the depth chart. This has led to a strategic dilemma regarding the injured reserve (IR) designation. Two players, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and defensive tackle James Thompson Jr., who are both sidelined with high-ankle sprains expected to keep them out for three to six weeks, have not been placed on IR. This decision is influenced by the NFL's rule allowing teams only eight IR return designations per season.

Shanahan explained the rationale: “That’s why it’s not simple just to put everybody on IR return because then eventually you’re not going to get one back. We’re going to run out of them eventually, so that’s what we’re trying to balance out, see how those guys are this week.”

While both players are considered likely candidates for IR, retaining them on the active roster temporarily allows the 49ers to preserve their limited IR return slots. This strategy aims to accommodate potential future injuries to more critical players later in the season, with 15 games still remaining.

Starting defensive tackle C.J. West recently became the latest player to go on IR with a return designation due to knee surgery. He joins a growing list of players expected to eventually return, including rookie wideout De’Zhaun Stribling, receiver Christian Kirk, offensive lineman Austen Pleasants, defensive lineman Alfred Collins, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and linebacker Nick Martin. Prior to Robinson and Thompson, this already numbered seven players.

The 49ers' injury concerns are amplified by the team's roster age, which was the oldest in the league entering the season. However, the current injured players are relatively young, with Christian Kirk, at 29, being the oldest among those on the injured reserve list.
