49ers Eyeing Trade Deadline Moves for Stars Amid Dominant Start
With a 5-0 record, San Francisco is poised to be active in acquiring talent to solidify their quest for the NFC's top seed.
The San Francisco 49ers, holding a commanding 5-0 record entering Monday night's game, are strategically positioning themselves for potential acquisitions ahead of the NFL's November 10 trade deadline. General Manager John Lynch has begun exploring the market, with several underperforming teams expected to become sellers, potentially offering valuable assets.
Tight end George Kittle has openly expressed his desire for the team to make significant moves, playfully engaging with Lynch about potential targets. "I just like to chirp him and ask what he’s interested in, to see if he’ll give me anything," Kittle stated, indicating a team-wide eagerness to bolster their roster.
Defensive Line Reinforcements
The 49ers could look to strengthen their defensive line, particularly with players who have past ties to the organization. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner of the Indianapolis Colts is a prime candidate. Having been a key player before his departure in free agency after the 2019 Super Bowl run, Buckner could fill a critical need for a run-stopping interior lineman who can also pressure the quarterback. The Colts, now 2-4 after a recent loss and having fired their general manager, may be open to a firesale. Buckner has voiced frustration with his team's consistent struggles, suggesting a potential willingness to move.
Another potential target on the defensive line is Vita Vea of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although signed to an extension, Vea, a local product from Milpitas, could be reconsidered by the Buccaneers if their season, now 1-5, continues to unravel. The 49ers could also explore other options on the Buccaneers' defensive line, such as A'Shawn Robinson or YaYa Diaby, if Vea proves unattainable.
Pass Rush Upgrades
Edge rusher Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders presents a significant, albeit challenging, potential acquisition. The Raiders, who started strong but have since lost three consecutive games to fall to 3-3, might reconsider making Crosby available. He represents arguably the biggest potential upgrade for the 49ers' pass rush.
Should a deal for Crosby not materialize, the winless Los Angeles Chargers could be a source for pass-rushing talent. Khalil Mack, despite being 35, has consistently generated sacks and could form a formidable pass-rushing duo with Nick Bosa, creating significant pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Wide Receiver and Special Teams
On the offensive side, the Atlanta Falcons' Drake London could be a target. The 49ers will face the Falcons next week, and a loss could drop Atlanta to 2-5, making them more inclined to consider trades. London, a highly drafted receiver, has expressed frustration with his usage and team success, potentially making a move to a winning environment like San Francisco attractive.
For special teams, the 49ers might consider Britain Covey of the Philadelphia Eagles. With the Eagles' season facing significant challenges, including injuries to key players, Covey could be an option to enhance the 49ers' return game, providing valuable experience in kick and punt returns.
