49ers Eyeing Jake Moody Reunion Amidst Eddy Piñeiro's Illness

The San Francisco 49ers are exploring the potential return of kicker Jake Moody, as current kicker Eddy Piñeiro is questionable for Week 2 with an illness. Piñeiro has missed three consecutive practices, prompting the team to schedule tryouts for two kickers on Saturday, with Moody being a likely candidate.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Friday that the team is evaluating two potential kickers but had not yet made a decision. Moody, a free agent, was previously released by the 49ers. He was originally selected by San Francisco in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft and served as the primary kicker until September 2025, when he was replaced by Piñeiro.

During his rookie season in 2023, Moody converted 21 of 25 field goal attempts (84%) and 60 of 61 extra points (98.4%). His 2024 season saw a drop in performance, with a 70.6% field goal success rate over 14 games. A high ankle sprain in October disrupted his momentum, affecting his mechanics and confidence.

After being waived by the 49ers in 2025, Moody had brief stints with the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders. He was most recently waived by the Baltimore Ravens after losing the kicking job to Tyler Loop.

Should Piñeiro be unable to play, Moody could have an opportunity to return to San Francisco and potentially redeem himself with the fanbase.
