49ers' Dre Greenlaw Suspended One Game for Headbutt
The linebacker's aggressive playing style, once lauded by coach Kyle Shanahan as 'Mike Tyson,' has led to a one-game suspension for an on-field incident.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been suspended for one game by the NFL following an incident during the team's victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The suspension stems from a head-butting infraction against Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV, which occurred after Greenlaw delivered a late hit on quarterback Sam Darnold.
General Manager John Lynch, speaking on KNBR, revealed that coach Kyle Shanahan affectionately calls Greenlaw "Mike Tyson" due to his ferocious competitive nature. This aggressive style, while often lauded and seen as a driving force behind the 49ers' success, has now placed the team on the wrong side of a disciplinary action. Greenlaw had previously been penalized for a late hit on Darnold, a play that drove Greenlaw deep into Seahawks territory and drew a 15-yard personal foul penalty. However, his actions following the whistle proved more costly.
Greenlaw's history with disciplinary actions was noted by the league. In the past season, he received a one-game suspension for berating an official. He was also involved in an altercation with Eagles head of security Dominic "Big Dom" DiSandro in 2023 and committed a helmet-to-helmet hit on Justin Herbert the season prior. Following his ejection against the Seahawks, Greenlaw posted a critical message on his Instagram account directed at the NFL, which he later deleted. Shanahan expressed disappointment with the league's decision but acknowledged the need to manage the situation.
While the NFL's focus on player safety, particularly regarding head trauma, is a significant factor, Greenlaw's pattern of escalating behavior appears to have contributed to the severity of the punishment. The incident occurred in the second quarter of the 49ers' 32-29 win. Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV reportedly sustained no injuries from the head-butt.
The suspension means the 49ers will be without their second-leading tackler when they host the Commanders on Monday night. This is compounded by a hamstring injury to backup linebacker Garrett Wallow, who is expected to miss several weeks. Despite Greenlaw's valuable contributions and inspirational presence on the field, his inability to control his emotions in heated moments has led to significant consequences for both himself and his team.
