49ers Broadcaster Greg Papa Needs Immediate Heart Transplant

Greg Papa, the longtime broadcaster for the San Francisco 49ers, is in need of an immediate heart transplant. Papa was hospitalized earlier this month with advanced heart failure, and his case is scheduled for presentation to the UCSF Health Heart Transplant Board on Tuesday.

Papa, a prominent figure in Bay Area sports media, has a history of serious health issues. He previously battled leukemia, undergoing treatment that included a bone marrow transplant. Despite these health challenges, he was working towards a return to the airwaves.

In early August, Papa's contract with KNBR, the radio station where he hosts "Lunch with Papa," was terminated. This decision sparked considerable backlash given his recent recovery from cancer treatment. Cumulus, the media company owning KNBR, later stated it would explore options to bring Papa back to the station. He was expected to return in a part-time capacity for "Lunch with Papa" and for weekly "Niners Updates" segments on morning and afternoon shows.

However, the current medical situation has shifted the focus. Papa's advanced heart failure has necessitated the urgent consideration for a heart transplant, overshadowing his recent professional developments.
