49ers Brace for Hostile Seattle Environment Amidst Offensive Struggles
San Francisco faces the noise of Lumen Field and a challenging Seahawks defense, aiming to break a recent scoring drought.
The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to face a significantly different environment on Sunday as they travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks at Lumen Field. Known for its deafening crowd noise, the stadium presents a stark contrast to the relatively quiet home games the 49ers have experienced thus far this season. This matchup marks a crucial test for the 49ers' offense, which has struggled to find the end zone against Seattle's defense in recent contests.
Despite navigating nearly 16,000 miles of travel already, San Francisco has not had to employ a silent count on offense. However, this is set to change against the Seahawks and their famed "12th Man." Running back Christian McCaffrey acknowledged the challenge, stating, "It’s always a good test. You know, super-loud stadium, hostile environment. Obviously [a] division opponent, so it’ll be a good test for us." Linebacker Fred Warner echoed this sentiment, describing Seattle's stadium as "one of those places where it’s going to be hostile."
Kyle Shanahan's team has a history of mixed results in Seattle. While they have secured victories at Lumen Field in the past, including a memorable game-saving tackle by Dre Greenlaw in 2019 and an unlikely go-ahead touchdown by Jake Tonges last season, their recent offensive performance against Seattle's defense has been concerning. It has been eight quarters since the 49ers' offense scored against Mike Macdonald's defense.
Shanahan has focused on finding ways to counter Seattle's defensive strategies. "Even when you get through that front seven, it’s tough to get past those safeties," Shanahan explained. "The safeties back up everybody for big plays, yet they’re still very aggressive, and it doesn’t just feel like you can dink and dunk them the whole game. The combination of those two things is rare."
The absence of fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who is sidelined with a knee injury, adds another layer of complexity. Juszczyk has been a consistent presence for the 49ers since 2022. In his absence, tight ends George Kittle, Brayden Willis, and Luke Farrell will be tasked with picking up some of his responsibilities, including blocking Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori. Emmanwori's versatility, allowing him to play at any defensive level, poses a schematic challenge for opposing offenses.
Compounding these challenges is quarterback Brock Purdy's historical performance against Macdonald's defense. In his past four matchups against Seattle's scheme, Purdy has a passer rating of 75.5, a significant drop from his 110.5 rating in other games during the same span. The 49ers' offensive line will need to provide Purdy with adequate time to make plays and hear his calls amidst the roar of the Seattle crowd.
