49ers and Vikings Maintain Undefeated Status in NFL Week 5
San Francisco secures a tough win over Seattle, while Minnesota continues its streak with a strong defensive performance.
The San Francisco 49ers and the Minnesota Vikings both extended their perfect starts to the NFL season in Week 5. The 49ers improved to 5-0 with a hard-fought 32-29 victory over Super Bowl champions Seattle.
Despite a crucial early ejection of defensive star Dre Greenlaw for a headbutt, San Francisco's defense forced a season-high seven turnovers from the Seahawks, converting three of them into touchdowns. This marked the most points Seattle has allowed off turnovers in a decade. Quarterback Brock Purdy ultimately led the 49ers to the win, aided by new wide receiver Mike Evans, who contributed 113 receiving yards and a late touchdown. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has now led the team to a 5-0 start for the third time, having reached the NFC Championship game on all four previous occasions.
The Minnesota Vikings also reached 5-0 with a 23-13 win against the New Orleans Saints, fueled by another dominant defensive effort under Brian Flores. Wins over teams like the Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Miami Dolphins have contributed to their record, though their true strength will be tested after their upcoming bye week. Their defense has been a key factor, allowing an average of only 13 points per game.
Elsewhere in the league, the Washington Commanders and the New York Giants played to a 27-27 tie after a series of late-game errors. The Giants forced overtime with two late touchdowns but fumbled possession when attempting a potential game-winning field goal. Washington then failed to convert their own late opportunity, running out of time on the clock.
The Baltimore Ravens secured a 30-23 overtime victory against the Atlanta Falcons. Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley threw a touchdown with under a minute left in regulation and then scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime. The Ravens are now 4-1 and positioned as a strong contender.
In another close contest, the Cleveland Browns missed an extra point and fumbled a late punt, which the New York Jets converted into the winning touchdown for a 17-12 victory. The Jets' defense was particularly effective, recording eight sacks against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.
