22 Illegal Immigrants, Including 13 Chinese Nationals, Arrested After Florida Smuggling Attempt
Authorities intercepted a rare maritime journey near Key Largo, highlighting the diverse and increasingly dangerous methods migrants employ to enter the U.S.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Coast Guard apprehended 22 individuals, including 13 Chinese nationals, who were attempting to enter the United States illegally by sea via a small smuggling vessel near Angelfish Creek, Florida.
The interdiction, which took place on Tuesday near Key Largo, involved a 27-foot cuddy cabin vessel. CBP Air and Marine Operations initially detected the boat, leading to a joint operation with the Coast Guard. Authorities arrested one suspected smuggler, identified as a Cuban national, along with 13 Chinese nationals, eight Ecuadorian nationals, and one Dominican national.
Sources described the incident as rare, noting that Chinese nationals typically attempt to enter the U.S. through land routes. Maritime Caribbean routes are more commonly used by migrants from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba. This particular crossing underscores the evolving tactics used in human smuggling operations.
Andres Blanco, executive director of Air and Marine Operations Southeast Region, emphasized the dangers of illegal sea voyages, stating, "attempting to enter the United States illegally by sea is extremely dangerous and will not go undetected." He added that such attempts carry risks of arrest, prosecution, removal, and potentially loss of life at sea.
The apprehended migrants were transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Pablo Valent for processing, and the vessel was seized. Lt. Corryn Ulrich, commanding officer of the Pablo Valent, highlighted the effectiveness of interagency cooperation in securing the border and enforcing federal law at sea.
The CBP Air and Marine Operations unit is tasked with identifying and countering aviation and maritime threats to national security.
The incident occurs amidst broader discussions on immigration enforcement, including a recent event in Austin, Texas, where an ICE officer shot a Venezuelan migrant who had illegally entered the country and had a removal order.
