As the college football season unfolds, the trajectories of several top prospects for the 2027 NFL Draft are becoming clearer, with some surging up draft boards and others facing a decline. Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker has emerged as a legitimate early-round candidate following a series of impressive performances, while South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers is experiencing a downturn in his draft stock due to critical errors.
Mestemaker, a redshirt sophomore, has combined prototypical size, athleticism, and a strong arm with rapidly improving experience. His standout performance in a mid-September upset of Oregon and a subsequent win against West Virginia have shifted him from a player of curiosity to a potential first-round pick. Scouts are noting his ability to make impactful plays.
In contrast, LaNorris Sellers of South Carolina, despite possessing significant physical talent and intangibles, has made critical mistakes in recent games. His performance against Alabama, which included a pick-six, has raised questions among scouts about his consistency for the NFL level. Sellers' touchdown-to-interception ratio has worsened throughout his career, a trend that has become a point of concern.
Other notable risers include Oregon guard Dave Luli, praised for his physicality and quickness; USC offensive tackle Elijah Paige, recognized for his impressive pass-blocking skills at left tackle; UCLA linebacker Sammy Omosigho, who leads the nation in forced fumbles and shows explosive athleticism; and South Carolina cornerback Vicari Swain, who has not only excelled as a punt returner but also shown improved coverage and tackling abilities.
Conversely, several players are experiencing a fall in draft projections. Louisville running back Isaac Brown, who was once considered a top running back prospect, has seen his yards-per-carry drop significantly this season after adding weight in the offseason. Florida State offensive tackle Xavier Chaplin, an All-American in 2023, has struggled with speed rushers, appearing heavy-footed and off-balance in recent games. Michigan cornerback Jyaire Hill has had issues with missed tackles and allowing completions, showing struggles with hip fluidity and quick changes of direction. LSU safety Ty Benefield, despite his speed and physicality, needs to improve his angles and wrap-up technique to be considered a top NFL prospect.
