A 19-year-old man who died after jumping from Los Angeles City Hall on Wednesday has been identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office as Avery Truesdale. Emergency responders were called to the downtown Los Angeles building shortly after 4 p.m. following reports someone had fallen from the upper floors.

Law enforcement sources indicated that Truesdale leaped from the observation deck, located on the 27th floor on the Spring Street side of the building, before landing on the front steps. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sources also stated that Truesdale was not a City of Los Angeles employee and was wearing a visitor badge when his body was discovered.

Visitors to Los Angeles City Hall are required to pass through security screening, obtain a temporary visitor badge, and state their purpose of visit and destination to security personnel before being allowed access.

On Thursday, sections of LA City Hall remained cordoned off with yellow crime-scene tape as the investigation continued, and steel security doors blocked public access to parts of the building. The City Hall observation deck remained open to visitors. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the death as an apparent suicide. No further details about the circumstances surrounding Truesdale’s death were immediately available.
