13-Year-Old Hailed as Hero for Shielding Sister During Louisiana Shooting
A Shreveport teenager died protecting his younger sister from gunfire at their apartment complex, an act for which he has been posthumously honored.
A 13-year-old boy in Shreveport, Louisiana, has been recognized as a hero for sacrificing his life to shield his younger sister during a shooting incident. Sha'Michael Russell died on September 28th after being shot in the chest at the Olde Salem Village Apartments complex.
According to family members and the Shreveport Police Department (SPD), when gunfire erupted, Russell immediately intervened to protect his three-year-old sister, positioning himself to shield her from the bullets. His sister was unharmed.
Russell was one of three children shot on a basketball court at the complex that evening. The other two victims were aged two and 17 years old and sustained injuries. Russell was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
SPD authorities have charged Javieon Abbott, 19, with two counts of attempted second-degree murder. Alonzo Abbott, 19, faces charges of one count of principal to second-degree murder and two counts of principal to attempted second-degree murder in connection with the shooting.
SPD Chief Wayne Smith stated in a Facebook post that detectives worked tirelessly to ensure justice for Russell and the other injured children.
Following his death, Russell was posthumously awarded the Youth Heroism Award by the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation, also known as the Uvalde Foundation. Daniel Chapin, the foundation's founder and president, told KSLA that the award recognized the courage described by Russell's family.
Russell's family described him as a loving and playful boy who helped neighbors, enjoyed sports, made others laugh, and deeply cared for his sister. He is the first teenager to receive the foundation's Youth Heroism Award posthumously.
The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation has initiated an emergency fundraiser to support Russell's family with funeral expenses and other financial hardships.
Shreveport Police Department is continuing its investigation and is asking anyone with information to come forward. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Chief District Public Defender of Caddo Parish for comments regarding the Abbott brothers.
