A 13-year-old boy was killed and a 45-year-old man also died after a gunman fired dozens of rounds into a home in DeKalb County, Georgia, early on July 2.
Demarcus Shirley was sleeping over at a friend's house when the shooting occurred shortly before dawn. Investigators say both Shirley and Chauncey Newman, 45, were struck by the gunfire. Other children present in the home were not physically injured.
On July 7, authorities arrested 21-year-old Keyshun Webb in connection with the deadly shooting. Webb faces two murder charges, eight counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, and one count of cruelty to animals. He is being held without bond at the DeKalb County Jail.
Investigators believe the shooting may be gang-related, as shell casings recovered from this crime scene matched those from another drive-by shooting on the same day. Arrest warrants suggest Webb may have been involved in that incident as well. Authorities believe four male suspects in two vehicles were involved in the shootings, though no other arrests have been announced.
Friends and relatives described Demarcus Shirley as an energetic teenager with a bright future. "He had a lot of life in front of him," his great-uncle, Gregory Carthon, told Atlanta News First.
Survivors of the shooting recounted the traumatic experience. Larenzo Pinkins, who was in the house, described finding his friend Demarcus. "I'm happy it wasn't me. I'm happy I wasn't hit, but it should've been me, though, before Demarcus," Pinkins said. "Demarcus had too much life to live. He died too young."
Another survivor, Larry Bell-Ware, stated that Demarcus Shirley had no ties to violence and was a typical child who enjoyed playing. The children also remembered Chauncey Newman, whose home served as a refuge for neighborhood youth, with Bell-Ware noting, "Any kids who were ever just walking around and didn't have anywhere to go, they could just come here. He was just a good person in general."
The investigation into the motive for the shooting and the identification of any other suspects is ongoing.
