12-Year-Old Girl Fatally Shot in Baltimore Park During Youth Football Game
A dispute between two men over a parking spot escalated into gunfire, striking the girl and a woman, police said.
A 12-year-old girl died after being shot at Leon Day Park in Baltimore on Saturday evening, where a youth football game was taking place. Three other people, including a woman, were also injured in the incident.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that officers responded to the park around 6:15 p.m. and found the girl and a woman with gunshot wounds. Two men later arrived at area hospitals seeking treatment for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The girl was pronounced dead at a hospital.
According to Worley, the shooting stemmed from an argument between two men over a parking spot, which led to them firing shots at each other. The girl and the woman were struck by stray bullets. Police are searching for at least two suspects in connection with the shooting.
"Two grown men got into an argument, and now a 12-year-old is gone," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said at a news conference. "We never should have to say something like that. What happened out here today is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in my life."
Investigators were processing the scene and it was unclear how many shots were fired. Police have appealed to the public for any witnesses to come forward.
