A 12-year-old girl from the New South Wales Hunter Valley, known as Alisha or 'Ali Cat,' has died following a struggle with mental health, her family confirmed.
Alisha was remembered as a beloved daughter, friend, and talented young rugby league player, whose loss has deeply affected her community. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist her family with funeral expenses.
"Alisha unfortunately was battling mental health which her family was trying their hardest to help her," a family friend stated, expressing a desire to help Alisha's family provide her with a fitting farewell.
Dan Repacholi, the Member for the Hunter, paid tribute to Alisha and urged the public to check on their friends. "There are no words that can make sense of a loss like this. A young life taken far too soon is something no family, teammates, coaches or community should ever have to face," Repacholi said. He extended condolences to her family and friends, and acknowledged the compassion shown by Alisha's teammates.
"Mental health matters, and so does looking out for each other. If you’re struggling, or if someone you know doesn’t seem themselves, please reach out. A conversation really can make all the difference. Be kind to one another. Check in on your mates. And let’s wrap our arms around this community as they grieve," Repacholi added.
Alisha's local club, the Southlakes Roosters, announced they would honor her life with a special themed round this weekend. The club expressed gratitude for the community's support and stated that support would be available at their home ground for anyone who might need it during the emotional day. "Once a Rooster, always a Rooster," the club affirmed.
Junior rugby league clubs across the Hunter were invited to participate in the tribute by wearing pink ribbons, styling their hair in three plaits or braids to represent Alisha's number three jersey, wearing wristbands, and observing a minute's silence before games. Several clubs committed to retiring their number three jersey for the round.
Alisha played for the Roosters' Under-12 girls team and had been training with the Under-14 squad. Her teammates have found ways to remember their friend, with the club noting the beautiful job they have done.
