World's Largest Battery-Electric Plane Completes 27-Minute Inaugural Flight

The world's largest battery-electric aircraft, Heart Aerospace's X1, has successfully completed its first flight. The piloted mission, which took place on August 12 at Heart's X1 flight-test base at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York, lasted 27 minutes.

The aircraft, spanning 106 feet and weighing over 11.33 tonnes at takeoff, reached an altitude of 1,100 feet during the flight. The mission included taxi, takeoff, climb, maneuvering, and landing, demonstrating all-electric flight at a scale relevant to commercial airline operations.

X1 is a technology demonstrator designed to test systems for the company's planned 30-seat ES-30 plane. During its inaugural flight, the aircraft consumed approximately $5 (£3.70) worth of electricity, a cost significantly lower than current jet fuel prices. This low operating cost is a key advantage as global jet fuel prices have seen a substantial year-over-year increase.

Heart Aerospace stated that electric commercial aircraft have the potential to significantly lower operating costs for airlines and reduce air travel expenses for passengers. Anders Forslund, founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace, highlighted the company's vision of enabling more affordable, frequent, and cleaner air service.

The ES-30 aircraft has already garnered commitments from major air carriers, including United Airlines and Air Canada. Michael Leskinen, executive vice president and chief financial officer of United Airlines, expressed support for Heart Aerospace's development, noting the potential for electric commercial aircraft to improve the travel experience and strengthen business operations.

Heart Aerospace targets entry into service for the ES-30 in 2031 and anticipates that it could reduce aircraft operating costs by over 40 percent compared to traditional regional aircraft. This projected cost reduction is attributed to lower energy expenses, decreased maintenance needs, and improved aircraft reliability. The company is currently developing the first pre-production ES-30 at its manufacturing plant in Los Angeles, with flight testing scheduled to commence in 2028.
