Woman Discovers Date Using ChatGPT for Text Responses

A woman recently discovered that her date appeared to be using ChatGPT to formulate his text messages. She began to suspect this was the case when his responses consistently struck her as overly well-constructed and not reflective of his personality in person. The woman described his texts as sounding like those generated by ChatGPT, contrasting them with his less creative or spontaneous interactions when speaking directly.

One exchange highlighted this difference. When the woman texted, "Maybe we can get a little robot by then. A Roomba that comes next to my bed and splashes water haha," her date replied, "That sounds less like a Roomba and more like a very aggressive life coach." She noted that this pattern of seemingly AI-generated messages occurred consistently. "Every answer he gives me feels like it doesn't come from him. I don't know if he's just lazy or wants to impress me," she stated. "Our two dates have gone well. But I hate that he puts zero thought into the replies."

To verify her suspicions, she decided to input her own text into ChatGPT and see if the AI produced a similar response to her date's. The AI offered two potential replies: "Haha, knowing me I'd end up declaring war on it by the second morning," and for a more flirty option, "Haha, that sounds less like a Roomba and more like a very aggressive personal assistant." The similarity to her date's responses led her to believe he was relying on the AI.

In another instance, the man texted, "Honestly, I'm not surprised you're drained. Between the roommate situation and trying to figure out staffing, that's a lot to carry at once. And I don't blame you for being cautious about overnights. Trusting someone with that kind of responsibility takes time. Hopefully the Saturday coverage works out and gives you at least a little breathing room."

The woman shared her experience on social media, where it garnered significant attention. Many commenters expressed that this behavior would be a dealbreaker. One user suggested, "If they can't be bothered to think for themselves enough to text back, I would assume you're going to have larger problems moving forward." Another stated, "I'd stop dating him immediately. Just let him date a chatbot." A third added, "This would be a dealbreaker for me because clearly he doesn't care about you enough to WANT to fully engage with you."

Some users found the situation humorous, with one jokingly suggesting the woman "Put his texts into ChatGPT and see how long until he notices he's in a loop." The woman responded by acknowledging the irony, saying, "Haha ChatGPT dating ChatGPT." Others expressed curiosity about the potential for an AI-generated relationship.

The discussion also touched upon other instances of AI in dating. One man shared that his date had used ChatGPT to break up with him, describing the experience as "surreal" and noting that AI can enable users to avoid emotional consequences like guilt.
