Woman Discovers AI-Generated Sexual Image of Herself After Strangers Take Photo at Bar
A 29-year-old woman reported an incident where strangers used AI to create explicit images of her without her consent, raising concerns about the rapid advancement of such technology.
A 29-year-old woman has described her distress after discovering that strangers at a bar had taken her photograph and used artificial intelligence to create sexualized images of her. The incident occurred on a Friday night at a bar in Scarborough Beach, near Perth, Australia.
Jade, as she was identified, was at the bar with a friend when they began a conversation with a group of men. According to Jade, one of the men secretly took her picture and then utilized AI technology to generate an altered image depicting her in a sexual act with one of the strangers. She stated that the men showed her the image, believing it to be humorous.
Jade recounted that her initial reaction was to dismiss the incident, but upon further reflection, she recognized the severity of her consent being violated. "They took a photo of me without my knowledge and then used AI to turn that image into something sexual for their own entertainment," she explained to the Daily Mail. "That was the moment it became much bigger to me than a group of men behaving badly on a night out."
After posting about the incident on social media, one of the men involved contacted Jade to apologize. He claimed the image was part of an ongoing joke between friends and confirmed he had deleted all copies of the AI-generated picture. However, Jade did not find the explanation amusing, stating, "A joke is something everyone gets to laugh at. If your joke requires secretly photographing someone and using technology to sexualize them without their consent, the person you're laughing at isn’t part of the joke."
Jade expressed concern about the accessibility and convincing nature of AI technology, noting that it allows for the creation of realistic, fabricated, or degrading content without the subject's knowledge or participation. She emphasized that AI does not negate the need for consent and highlighted the potential for such images to be saved, shared, and further altered, extending beyond the initial intent.
She has reported the matter to the bar and the police. Jade hopes that by sharing her experience, others will understand the implications of using AI to violate consent and that such technology should not be seen as an excuse for exploitation. "AI may be new. Respect isn't," she stated, urging individuals to consider the impact of their actions on others.
