Which? Tests Reveal Top Air Purifiers for Common Household Allergens
Consumer advocacy group Which? has identified three leading air purifiers from extensive testing, offering solutions for pollen, pet dander, and cooking odors.
Consumer advocacy group Which? has evaluated 110 air purifiers to identify the top performers for removing common household pollutants. The tested models ranged in price from £29 to £448, with the recommended models starting at £79.
Testing Methodology
Which? employed a rigorous testing process, using lab equipment to measure each air purifier's Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), which indicates how effectively they remove particles of various sizes. Testers also introduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the lab environment to assess the machines' ability to eliminate harmful gases. Filter durability was evaluated by exposing them to the smoke of 100 cigarettes and measuring their subsequent effectiveness. Additional factors such as energy consumption, running costs, and noise levels were also graded.

Top Performing Models
Best Value
The best value air purifier, priced at £79, costs an estimated £5.43 annually to run. This compact model measures H 28.5cm x W 16cm x D 16cm and weighs 1.16kg. Testers found it effectively removed particles from the air and operated quietly, making it easy to move around the home. However, its performance in removing gas pollutants was noted as less effective.
Best Mid-Range
This mid-range option, with an annual running cost of £23.68, achieved top marks for removing particles of all sizes. It also demonstrated excellent filter durability. The unit measures H 51.5cm x W 27.5cm x D 28cm and weighs 6.32kg. While energy consumption is not steep, testers noted that the display screen's brightness could be an issue for users with visual impairments.
Best Blowout
The premium model, costing £41.69 annually to run, excels in air cleaning and odor removal, featuring long-lasting filters. It also includes a UV light to kill trapped germs. This model measures H 62cm x W 50cm x D 25cm and weighs 14.88kg. Its main drawbacks are less brilliant energy efficiency and a heavier weight, making it more cumbersome to move.
