Which? Experts Rate Robot Lawnmowers After Testing 26 Models
Consumer group Which? evaluated robot lawnmowers for cutting evenness, battery life, and obstacle navigation.
Consumer group Which? has published its findings on 26 robot lawnmower models, assessing their performance in cutting grass evenly, battery longevity, and ability to navigate garden obstacles. The testing aimed to identify the best options available to consumers.
The first robot mower was invented in 1995, and while some modern models still rely on boundary wires, others now utilize technologies like cameras and GPS for navigation. The evaluation by Which? experts included models ranging in price from £330 to £2,199.
Testing Method Which? experts subjected the robot lawnmowers to rigorous testing over four weeks. They operated the mowers on various grass conditions, including long, rough, and damp grass, as well as standard lawn areas. Key performance indicators included the evenness of the cut, any missed spots, and wear on wheels or blades after use. The testers also evaluated how effectively each mower navigated around obstacles such as fences and trees, and measured their battery life. To ensure unbiased results, Which? purchased all the products it tested.
Recommended Value Model For smaller gardens, a model recommended for its value is suited for lawns up to 250 square meters. It boasts a charging time of 60 minutes and a typical mowing time of 70 minutes on a single charge. This mower performed excellently on dry grass and was noted for its ease of use and fast charging. However, it struggled with long and damp grass and requires a boundary wire to confine its operation area.
Recommended Mid-Range Model A mid-range option, suitable for lawns up to 800 square meters, requires 100 minutes to charge and offers approximately 65 minutes of mowing time per charge. This model was praised for its consistent cutting across different grass types, its agility in maneuvering around obstacles and through narrow spaces, and its straightforward setup. It features GPS technology, eliminating the need for a boundary wire. The primary drawbacks noted were that it could be fiddly to clean and its charging time was longer compared to some other models.
Best High-End Model For larger areas, a high-end model is recommended for lawns up to 1,800 square meters. It charges in 60 minutes and provides about 70 minutes of mowing time. This mower demonstrated excellent performance in large spaces, achieving top scores for cutting across all grass types and performing well on steep terrain. It is also described as extremely easy to set up and operate. Its main disadvantages are its high cost and its requirement for a boundary wire.
