Vodafone has introduced a new mobile plan called 'SuperMobile' that provides customers with priority access to its 5G network, aiming to resolve signal problems at crowded venues such as music festivals, gigs, and sporting events. The plan offers speeds up to four times faster than standard service, with a guaranteed minimum speed of 15Mbps in its most advanced signal areas.
This offering marks the first time a mobile network has guaranteed a minimum speed, a feature typically associated with home broadband services. Vodafone positions 'SuperMobile' as a premium option for users requiring consistent connectivity, whether for rapid downloads or streaming. Customers are able to leave the plan without an exit fee if Vodafone fails to deliver the promised speeds and cannot resolve the issue within 30 days.
The cost of the 'SuperMobile' plan varies, with add-ons ranging from £3 to £12 per month more than standard Vodafone plans. Business plans for small enterprises are also available.
According to Rob Winterschladen of VodafoneThree, the 'SuperMobile' plan provides a dedicated '5G+ FastTrack' offering faster speeds, enhanced reliability, and advanced security features. The technology works by allocating paying customers a reserved segment of the mobile spectrum. In areas where this dedicated segment is not available, users on the premium plan will still have their data prioritized over other users.
Vodafone stated that this prioritization does not violate the principle of net neutrality, as it prioritizes its own customers over other users on its network, not specific websites or applications. The company is also developing similar technology for emergency services, creating a 'National Critical Slice' to ensure police, fire, and ambulance crews remain connected during major incidents.
This initiative follows a pledge by VodafoneThree, formed through a merger last year, to invest £11 billion in network improvements. In testing, Vodafone reported achieving speeds of up to 724Mbps on the new network, though actual daily speeds will depend on user location.
In addition to network enhancements, the 'SuperMobile' plans include built-in threat detection, ID monitoring, and AI-powered scam call protection.
