US Lifts Export Ban on Anthropic's Advanced AI Tools

The U.S. government has lifted export controls on Anthropic's most advanced artificial intelligence tools, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The company announced the change after the U.S. Department of Commerce notified them of the decision.

These advanced AI models were abruptly suspended on June 12, following concerns that they could be exploited by hackers to find vulnerabilities in computer systems. Anthropic stated that U.S. authorities had not identified specific concerns about its technology even as the suspension was ordered globally.

Anthropic explained that its understanding was that the government had become aware of a method to bypass or "jailbreak" Fable 5. The company, however, disagreed that a narrowly identified potential jailbreak should necessitate the recall of a commercial model used by millions.

Fable and Mythos are part of Anthropic's Claude platform, which competes with AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. Fable 5 is designed for consumers and is capable of complex reasoning and independent task execution. Mythos 5 is targeted at businesses and cybersecurity professionals, reportedly able to detect and exploit weaknesses in computer code.
