UK Mobile Speeds Lag Behind Developing Nations, Data Shows
New rankings place the UK 61st globally for download speeds, with London's speeds slower than war-torn Kharkiv.
Britain's mobile phone download speeds have fallen behind those in Romania, Kazakhstan, and Cambodia, according to new data, raising concerns about the UK's digital infrastructure and economic competitiveness.
The UK ranked 61st worldwide with an average download speed of 77 megabits per second (Mbps). Romania placed 57th (87 Mbps), Kazakhstan 56th (88 Mbps), and Cambodia 50th (99 Mbps).
In London, average download speeds were found to be slower than in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
The United Arab Emirates led the global rankings with 643 Mbps, followed by Qatar (570 Mbps) and Kuwait (374 Mbps).
Gareth Elliot, director of policy at Mobile UK, a trade body representing major network operators, described the situation as a "deteriorating phone signal problem" that requires urgent attention. "Better mobile connectivity underpins everyday life, business growth and better public services," Elliot stated, urging "clear action" as a priority for the new prime minister.
Experts suggest that planning disputes and public objections to the construction of new phone masts are hindering necessary infrastructure upgrades. Councils currently make decisions on these upgrades, leading to delays that prevent network expansion from meeting rising demand.
Despite these challenges, 4G coverage from at least one operator now extends to 96 percent of the UK landmass. However, users report increasing difficulty with mobile internet access and calls in crowded areas, even with a full signal indication.
A government spokesperson indicated that efforts are underway to improve services, citing the Shared Rural Network initiative and ongoing work with industry and Ofcom to enhance network performance. The government is also reviewing planning rules to accelerate the rollout of digital infrastructure. Natalie Black, Ofcom's head of infrastructure and connectivity, pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to address these barriers.
