TripAdvisor AI Criticized for Downplaying Negative Hotel Reviews

TripAdvisor's artificial intelligence chatbot has drawn criticism for allegedly downplaying significant guest complaints in its review summaries. An investigation revealed that the AI appeared to omit or soften reports of issues such as food poisoning, poor hygiene, and allegations of sexual harassment, while presenting an overly positive view of some accommodations.

One notable instance involved the Riu Palace Santa Maria in Cape Verde. While the AI described the accommodations as "spotless" with "rave reviews" for its restaurants, guest accounts detailed raw chicken, unsanitary conditions around food, and warnings that the location could "destroy holidays." RIU Hotels & Resorts, the resort's operator, stated that they adhere to high standards of professionalism and prioritize hygienic-sanitary safety.

Another AI-generated summary for a resort in Turkey highlighted "friendly" service, despite guest reviews alleging repeated sexual harassment by male staff. The AI's summary referred to these incidents only as "lapses [in service] noted by a few."

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, told The Guardian that TripAdvisor has a responsibility to ensure the accuracy of its AI summaries. He advised users to review individual guest feedback, especially one-star ratings, and to cross-reference reviews on other platforms to ensure a safe travel experience.

TripAdvisor has stated it is reviewing the highlighted examples and continues to refine the feature. A company spokesperson said they are investigating instances where reviews did not match the intended property, expressing confidence that the features are functioning as designed to help travelers quickly assess feedback and explore underlying reviews. The company also noted that AI summaries are intended to complement, not replace, user reviews, and that its systems automatically suppress AI summaries for listings reporting serious safety incidents like death, drugging, and sexual assault.

The controversy comes as AI is increasingly being used by travelers, particularly younger demographics, to plan trips. A survey indicated that millennials and Gen Z are more likely than older generations to use AI for tasks such as comparing flights, selecting destinations, and creating itineraries.

This issue echoes previous instances where AI tools have provided inaccurate travel advice. In one reported case, an influencer couple missed a flight after ChatGPT incorrectly informed them they did not need an ESTA travel authorization for Puerto Rico. The incident served as a reminder that while AI can be a useful starting point for travel planning, users should verify critical details independently before making bookings.
