The Voice UK is once again at the center of controversy following the departure of long-serving coach Sir Tom Jones. The Welsh singer claimed he was dismissed over insurance concerns, stating he did not wish to leave the show he "love[s]." This latest upheaval comes as the program, now in its 14th season, has seen its lowest launch viewership to date, attracting just 1.9 million viewers, a stark contrast to its 2012 debut which averaged over seven million.
Amidst the changes, reports suggest Cheryl is poised for a television return as a judge, while rapper Aitch is rumored to replace McFly members Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher, who are also departing. The timing of these announcements, with filming for the next series commencing shortly after, has drawn attention, particularly as the current season was pre-recorded.
This season's coaching panel shake-up is the latest in a series of changes for the show, which has seen 18 different coaches since its inception. Early seasons featured Will.i.am, Jessie J, Sir Tom Jones, and Danny O'Donoghue. Subsequent seasons saw numerous additions and departures, including Kylie Minogue, Ricky Wilson, Rita Ora, Boy George, Paloma Faith, Jennifer Hudson, Gavin Rossdale, Olly Murs, Meghan Trainor, Anne-Marie, and LeAnn Rimes. The current lineup had recently welcomed Kelly Rowland alongside Will.i.am, Sir Tom, and the McFly duo.
The program's history is marked by a number of controversies. In its second season, host Holly Willoughby's attire during a live finale drew 139 complaints to Ofcom, with some viewers deeming her low-cut dress inappropriate for a family show airing before the 9 pm watershed. The BBC apologized for any offense caused, though they defended the dress as glamorous and appropriate for a television spectacle.
Internal conflicts have also surfaced. Boy George and Paloma Faith reportedly clashed during their single season together in 2015, with reports of the former calling the latter "bitchy" and "rude" during auditions. Faith later recounted an incident in her memoir where George allegedly made a sexist remark. More recently, in September 2026, George reignited their feud on social media, criticizing Faith's support for rapper Macklemore's "Free Palestine" statement at an Ed Sheeran concert, calling her a "soggy tuna sandwich" in terms of political awareness.
Sir Tom Jones's previous departures have also been contentious. In 2015, he was dropped from the show, with his team reportedly informed only a day before the new coaches were announced. At the time, the BBC defended the late notification as necessary to maintain secrecy around the new additions. Jones expressed disappointment with the "sub-standard behaviour" of the executives. After a one-season absence, he returned when the show moved to ITV. The then-BBC television boss Danny Cohen later apologized for upsetting the singer. A decade later, Jones finds himself dismissed again, reportedly due to insurance costs and a desire to "refresh" the show with a new lineup.
"Fix" accusations have also plagued The Voice UK. In 2016, Paloma Faith appeared to suggest a contestant's progression had been arranged. After Liberty X singer Kevin Simm was not initially saved by Faith, rival coach Ricky Wilson "stole" him. Faith was quoted as saying the decision to save Simm had been "agreed beforehand" with Wilson, although producers denied the claim, stating only that Faith had asked Wilson to steal Kevin if she didn't select him. Simm went on to win the competition that season. In the same year, fan favorite Cody Frost was eliminated unexpectedly, with her mentor Boy George stating they were both "pleased" by the outcome, partly because Frost would not have to perform the winner's single.
Despite its stated aim of focusing solely on talent, The Voice UK's behind-the-scenes narrative has often been overshadowed by coaching changes, interpersonal dramas, and allegations of manipulation, contributing to its declining viewership.
