The Best Electric Cars for Every Driver: A Comprehensive Guide

Electric car sales continue to accelerate, driven by rising fuel prices and a steady stream of new models designed to meet diverse driver requirements. More than 2.1 million electric vehicles (EVs) are now registered on Britain's roads, with over 160 new electric models available and average ranges increasing from 235 miles in 2024 to 300 miles today. The UK government's Electric Car Grant, offering up to £3,750 off qualifying new EVs, has also supported over 140,000 drivers in their transition to electric mobility.

As more than 50 new electric models are set to launch or go on sale in the UK this year, making an informed decision can be challenging. After testing over 80 popular EVs, a curated list of top choices has been compiled, covering a spectrum from budget-friendly options to high-performance aspirational vehicles.

Family-Focused Options

The Hyundai Kona Electric, first introduced in the UK in 2018, remains a strong contender for families. The current iteration offers a modern and advanced package, retaining the core appeal of its predecessors. This subcompact SUV comfortably seats five, with a cleverly designed rear bench seat maximizing passenger space. It provides a substantial 466-litre boot and an additional 27-litre frunk. Inside, the Kona Electric features a 24.6-inch panoramic display, a sustainable and premium interior, and smooth, easy handling. Its efficiency contributes to a respectable 319-mile range.

For larger families, the Kia EV9 stands out as a spacious option. This large SUV, measuring over five meters in length, offers seating for seven adults. Passengers reported positively on a recent 250-mile round trip, with the only minor complaint being the ability for rear passengers to control front seats. The EV9's interior emphasizes sustainability, incorporating materials like plant-fiber headrests, corn extract, sugar cane, sawdust, and ocean waste. Storage is abundant, with large door bins and cubbies, and an 828-litre boot when the third row is folded. Its range extends up to 349 miles, and ultra-fast charging can add over 150 miles in just 15 minutes, making it suitable for long journeys.

Budget-Friendly and Compact Choices

Honda's Super-N offers an affordable and characterful entry into the EV market, priced at £18,995. This model draws inspiration from its predecessor, the Honda-e, but at a significantly lower cost. Measuring under 3.6 meters long, it is one of the smallest cars available and features a design reminiscent of Japanese kei cars. The Super-N is designed for fun, with a 'boost' button increasing power and reducing acceleration times. It includes a seven-speed gear shift for a more engaging virtual driving experience, active sound control, and simulated purple lighting.

Long-Range and Towing Capabilities

When deliveries begin in August, the Volvo EX60 is set to offer the longest range among EVs sold in Britain. The P12 AWD variant, equipped with a 117kWh battery, boasts a range of 503 miles on a single charge. The EX60 supports charging up to 370kW, enabling drivers to add over 200 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes, with a 10% to 80% charge taking between 15 to 18 minutes. The interior features Scandi-cool sustainable materials like wool-blend and Nordico upholstery. With 523 litres of boot space, expandable to 634 litres with the underfloor compartment, it also provides ample storage.

For those needing to tow, the BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro Touring was recognized at the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s Towcar of the Year Awards. Electric cars are well-suited for towing due to their instant torque, low center of gravity for stability, and regenerative braking. The i5 is a spacious estate car for five, offering 570 liters of boot space with underfloor storage. It is equipped with premium features, including heated seats, a BMW curved display with video streaming, and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Sporty and Aspirational Models

The MG Cyberster represents a return to MG's roadster heritage in an all-electric format. Positioned as a second or third vehicle rather than a primary car, the Cyberster offers an emotive driving experience, particularly with the roof down. While it can be 'flighty' at speeds above 75 mph, this adds to its sense of fun. This two-seater EV is both nostalgic and stylish, with a suggested retail price of £55,245.

For the ultimate in electric performance, the Denza Z offers supercar-level acceleration and speed. The Denza Z, a luxury sub-brand of BYD, achieves 0 to 62 mph in as little as 1.96 seconds in its Racing variant, with a top speed of 217 mph. The vehicle can be charged in approximately five minutes using BYD's Flash Charging technology, offering a range of 236 miles. The track-ready Racing version is priced at £172,900, with Coupe and Spider variants available at lower price points.
