The beloved digital pet Tamagotchi is making a comeback, reimagined as a wearable ring, approximately 30 years after its initial debut.

Bandai, the toy company behind the original device, has launched the 'Tamagotchi Ring,' a miniature version designed to be worn on a finger. The new iteration retains the core caretaking experience of the classic toy, now presented in a compact, stylish ring form. "The world's smallest ring–shaped Tamagotchi device is born!" Bandai announced in a YouTube video. The company added, "Enjoy the same basic Tamagotchi care as before, but in a stylish ring form with the new 'Tamagotchi ring'!"

The Tamagotchi Ring is egg-shaped and features an LCD screen, similar to its predecessor. However, it is significantly smaller, measuring just 1.12 inches x 0.9 inches x 1.4 inches. Consumers can select from three color combinations: pink and pearl white, light blue and metallic gold, or black and metallic silver. The device is priced at ¥7700, equivalent to approximately £35.54.

The original Tamagotchi was first released in 1996. Its name is a portmanteau of the Japanese word 'tamago' (egg) and the English word 'watch.' The toy simulated a digital pet that owners had to care for, monitoring its happiness and hunger levels. Early versions required constant attention, with owners needing to press a button every 30 minutes to feed the pet, or risk it starving. This demand for attention led to widespread distraction, with some schools even banning the toys. Despite these challenges, the Tamagotchi was lauded for its potential to foster empathy and responsibility in children, ultimately selling over 100 million units globally.

It was the toy of the '90s that every child wanted...and every parent hated. Now, 30 years after the original Tamagotchi hit shelves, the digital pet is back
