Silo Season 3 Episode 5: Bernard and Sims' Relationship Evolves
Actors Common and Tim Robbins discuss a pivotal scene where Bernard reveals he knows Sims saved his life, leading to a profound moment of mutual understanding.

In the fifth episode of "Silo" Season 3, titled "Memory," the complex relationship between Robert Sims (Common) and Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) reaches a significant turning point. The episode delves into the aftermath of Bernard's survival, a detail previously concealed from Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson).
Previously, Sims had told Juliette that Bernard died during their Season 2 finale airlock entrapment, claiming he had watched Bernard burn. However, "Memory" revealed that Sims only partially suffocated Bernard, cut an air hole in the plastic wrapping, and then arranged for Bernard to be hidden away with the help of Walker (Harriet Walter) and Carla (Clare Perkins), who have been caring for him in the Digger Void.
This revelation sets the stage for an "electric" scene between Bernard and Sims, which both actors described as deeply meaningful. In the infirmary, Bernard, aware of Sims' actions, speaks to him about the dangerous directives from "the voice" and the sacrifices made by others, including Lukas Kyle and Camille (Alexandria Riley). He expresses gratitude and acknowledges Sims' difficult position.
"We can't risk losing you, Robert. You are indispensable," Bernard tells Sims. "I'm impressed with how you've handled everything... The things that fucking voice in the vault made me do."
For Sims, this acknowledgment from Bernard, whom he had long sought to impress, was particularly impactful. "Those words, man, they were like a father who hadn't been there telling you that you matter. It meant a lot to Robert," Common told Decider. "It had been one of his goals. One of the things he cared about most was to reach a certain level and do what he felt his purpose was in saving the Silo."
Robbins explained that Bernard's Season 3 arc involves significant internal change following his injuries and experiences. "His whole moral compass has shifted," Robbins said, noting that Bernard's conversation with Sims is a crucial step toward redemption. Robbins likened this to the first step of admitting wrongdoing and choosing a path of continuous learning and growth, a quality he admires in influential figures.
This evolution in Bernard's character, reminiscent of the positive change and redemption he has observed in his work with incarcerated individuals, suggests that he and Sims will play key roles in helping Juliette and her allies attempt to save Silo 18. The episode also saw Juliette regain memories about how Silo 17 disabled The Safeguard procedure, adding further urgency to their efforts. New episodes of "Silo" Season 3 premiere Fridays on Apple TV.
