Sequoia Capital's AI Investment Strategy Under Lin and Grady

Alfred Lin and Pat Grady, the new co-stewards of venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, have significantly increased the firm's focus on artificial intelligence since taking leadership in late 2025. Their strategy involves substantial investments in AI startups across various sectors, including law, healthcare, and cybersecurity, with a core belief that AI offers startups a competitive edge against established software companies.

Under their leadership, Sequoia has raised $10 billion across multiple funds. A notable portion of this capital has been directed towards AI, including a $2.5 billion investment in Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI. Sequoia also holds early investments in OpenAI itself, dating back to 2021. The firm's engagement in the AI landscape extends to SpaceX, which Sequoia was already invested in prior to its acquisition of xAI. This multi-pronged approach gives Sequoia exposure to three major competing artificial intelligence labs, a departure from the typical venture capital practice of backing a single entity in a given market.

Lin and Grady have been recognized for their influence in the AI sector, being named among TIME's 100 Most Influential People in AI for 2026. Despite the potential for initial public offerings (IPOs) from companies like SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic in the near future, Grady indicated that Sequoia's investment horizon is long-term. He stated that the firm's target market capitalization for each of these companies is approximately $10 trillion, suggesting that they are unlikely to heavily leverage IPOs for liquidity events, prioritizing sustained growth and value appreciation instead.
