Scottish Inventors Unveil Self-Growing Plant Pot

Scottish entrepreneurs have developed the world's first plant pot designed to grow with a houseplant, potentially removing the need for manual repotting. The new "Helix" pot, created by the brand POTR, can expand its soil capacity eightfold, growing from a 0.25-liter to a 2-liter container.

This innovative design draws inspiration from folding structures utilized by NASA engineers and origami principles, allowing users to expand the pot by twisting it and adding soil around existing roots. Andrew Flynn, co-founder of POTR, stated that the goal was to create a pot that adapts to a plant's growth rather than requiring frequent replanting, a process he noted can be daunting for many, particularly new plant owners.

The Helix pot is designed to support a plant from its early stages, such as a seed or cutting, through to a more mature size. It also features a self-watering system with a concealed reservoir and wick, enabling the plant to regulate its own water intake for up to two weeks.

The development of the Helix pot took nearly two years, involving the creation of 1,132 prototypes after initial paper models. The design emphasizes adaptability, a crucial factor in space exploration where equipment needs to be compact yet expandable.

"Most pots are designed for one stage of a plant's life," Flynn explained. "We wanted to create one system that could adapt from seed or cutting through to a more established plant."

The product has already garnered international attention following its launch on Kickstarter. POTR anticipates the standalone pot will be available for general sale in October, with an expected retail price of around £30.

The pot contains a concealed water reservoir and wick which allows your plant to self-regulate its own water intake for up to two weeks

Interchangeable accessories for the Helix pot will allow users to cultivate various herbs and microgreens, including basil, mint, parsley, coriander, and oregano. Specialized attachments, such as a propagation plate for cuttings and an expandable trellis for climbing plants, are also available.

Flynn, who co-founded POTR with his wife Eilidh Cunningham, noted the significant interest reflects a widespread recognition of the complexities of plant care, particularly concerning watering and repotting.

This follows POTR's previous success in 2019 with a self-watering, origami-inspired flat-pack plant pot, also launched via Kickstarter. That initial product was recognized as Sustainable Product of the Year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
