Scientists Develop T-Shirt Designed to Stay Fresh for 30 Days Without Washing

A new T-shirt developed by US-based startup Hercleon claims to remain fresh and odor-free for up to 30 days without the need for washing. The HercShirt V5.0 utilizes what the company describes as "seven odor-fighting elements" woven directly into the fabric.

Key among these elements are copper and silver, both known for their antimicrobial properties that can neutralize odor-causing bacteria. The fabric also incorporates volcanic ash, which contains porous minerals that absorb smells, similar to the function of materials found in some cat litters.

Hercleon offers the shirt in three versions: a "Budget" option for three days of freshness, a "Standard" for two weeks, and the "Max" version for a full month. The "Max" shirt is priced at $79.

The invention is the brainchild of Wenceslaus Muenyi, who was inspired by his own experiences with clothing smelling after extended travel. Muenyi developed the "HercFiber" material with the goal of combating unpleasant odors.

Body odor typically arises when bacteria on the skin break down sweat and dead skin cells. The sweat itself is often odorless, but the byproducts created by microbes living on the skin contribute to the distinct smell of body odor. Heat, exercise, stress, and hormonal changes can increase sweating, providing more moisture and material for these bacteria to process. Diet, medications, and certain medical conditions can also influence body odor.

The company claims that there are 'seven odour-fighting elements' in the shirt that kill smell-causing bacteria so that you smell fresh even after working up a sweat

Muenyi has cited research, including studies from the University of Southampton, that highlight copper's antimicrobial capabilities. For instance, studies have shown that dangerous MRSA bacteria are destroyed upon contact with copper and copper alloys. This property has led to the use of solid antimicrobial copper in high-touch surfaces in various public settings to help reduce infection spread.

In addition to copper and silver, the HercShirt incorporates zinc to neutralize sulfurous compounds found in stress sweat. Two other undisclosed elements are said to target hormonal and ammonia-based odors.

However, the company acknowledges that the odor-resistant shirt is not a substitute for personal hygiene and does not alter the body's natural scent. It also does not clean itself; dirt and stains will still accumulate on the fabric if not properly cared for.

Despite these limitations, the concept has garnered significant interest. Hercleon's crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter has raised over $272,000 from more than 1,740 backers. The shirt is currently available in black, with navy blue planned if the campaign reaches an additional $30,000.
