Samsung has taken to social media to playfully mock Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the new iPhone Duo. The South Korean tech giant's remarks highlight Apple's seven-year delay in releasing a foldable device, a category Samsung has been active in for years.
On X, Samsung Mobile US quipped, "Let us know when you're done reheating our leftovers," directly referencing Apple's late arrival. Samsung also poked fun at the iPhone Duo's ability to partially unfold and stand like an alarm clock, joking, "Not the bed side clock. It's giving groundhog day."
Samsung's criticisms extend to the design of the iPhone Duo, noting its striking resemblance to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, which was released earlier in 2026. Both devices feature a 7.6-inch inner display with a similar aspect ratio. The primary differences noted are in the outer screen size and unfolded thickness: the Z Fold8 has a 5.5-inch outer screen and is 4.5mm thick unfolded, while the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display and is 5.2mm thick unfolded.
Samsung's social media team further commented, "It's feeling very familiar. Is this a Sims sequel?" and alluded to its own three-way folding phone, the Galaxy Trifold, stating, "Making us wait? Fine. We'll be over here, folding 3 ways."
Some tech enthusiasts echoed Samsung's sentiment online, with comments like, "Apple is about to charge you $2,000 for a foldable phone that Samsung perfected 7 generations ago and people will still call it revolutionary," and "Apple just showed up to the party seven years late calling it innovation."
Other companies also joined in on the lighthearted criticism. Duolingo, the language learning app, pointed out the naming conflict with its mascot, "Duo," tweeting, "iPhone Duo: $1999. Duo on your iPhone: free." Chipotle, the Mexican restaurant chain, humorously posted a video of a burrito being wrapped, commenting, "We’ve had foldable technology for years btw."
Despite the social media jabs, the iPhone Duo is positioned as a high-end foldable device. Apple claims to have addressed the issue of screen creasing with its new design, which features a near-creaseless screen utilizing a titanium plate beneath the display, a method also seen in the Galaxy Z Fold8. The iPhone Duo also boasts a nano-texture finish on the display, previously used on MacBook Pro models, intended to improve legibility in bright conditions and reduce smudging.
The device features an "effortlessly smooth" hinge for durability and can be used in various orientations. The iPhone Duo is constructed from titanium and is available in "Night Sky" and "Star White" colors. It is Apple's most expensive iPhone to date, with prices ranging from £1,999 to £3,199 (or $1,999 to $3,199).
In terms of specifications, the iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch folding inner display and a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. It measures 11.3mm when folded and 5.2mm when unfolded, weighing 254g. Storage options range from 256GB to 2TB. Apple claims battery life of up to 44 hours using the outer display or 31 hours using the inner display. The rear camera system includes a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, with a 12MP Center Stage camera on the front/internal.
