Royal Caribbean Unveils World's Largest Cruise Ship, 'Legend of the Seas'
The £1.3 billion vessel boasts a zip-line, waterpark, and a unique onboard train experience.
Royal Caribbean has launched its latest and largest cruise ship, the £1.3 billion Legend of the Seas, which has set sail from Malaga to Rome. This colossal vessel, measuring 1,200 feet long and featuring 20 decks, can accommodate up to 7,000 passengers and has officially claimed the title of the world's biggest cruise ship. The ship's launch in Europe marks a first for the cruise line, which typically debuts its mega-ships in the U.S.
Innovation is a key focus for Royal Caribbean, with each new ship offering distinct features. Legend of the Seas is no exception, boasting attractions such as a zip-line, a large waterpark, and a carousel that appeals to both children and adults. The ship also features a variety of culinary options, including Korean, Mexican, and Cajun cuisines, alongside traditional pizzerias, all included in the fare. Entertainment includes shows described as 'West End meets Cirque du Soleil,' such as the aqua show 'Shockwave' and the ice-skating production 'Fusion.'
Onboard Neighborhoods and Attractions
The ship is designed with distinct 'neighborhoods' to cater to different passenger preferences. Families have dedicated areas, while an adults-only zone offers a more serene experience. The Suite neighborhood provides exclusive luxury accommodations. For thrill-seekers, Thrill Island is home to the aqua park and the Crown's Edge attraction, a combination of a freefall and zip-line that extends 150 feet over the ocean. For relaxation, the ship offers numerous pools, including the Swim and Tonic swim-up bar.
Unique Onboard Experiences
One of the ship's most talked-about features is its onboard railway. However, this is not a traditional train but a virtual reality (VR) experience. Passengers can embark on a 90-minute journey with a five-course meal, simulating travel along the ancient Silk Route. The VR experience includes simulated scenery and national cuisine paired with each destination. Another exclusive dining option is the Hollywoodland Supper Club, offering a glamorous atmosphere with jazz music and a curated menu of cocktails and courses, at an additional cost.
The ship also hosts elaborate shows, including a production of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' noted for its special effects and the inclusion of a child actor in the title role. The attention to detail in these productions, such as simulating the smell of chocolate, is highlighted as a key differentiator. The Legend of the Seas will be sailing in the Mediterranean throughout the summer.
A seven-night 'Western Mediterranean Cruise' on Legend of the Seas costs from £1,270 per person full-board, with a round-trip voyage from Barcelona calling at Majorca, Marseille, La Spezia, Rome, and Naples, departing October 11th. Further details are available on the Royal Caribbean website.
