Robot Falls Down Stairs After Noticing Machine Cheerleaders at World Humanoid Games
The incident occurred during the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, where robots competed in sports and real-world tasks.
A robot participating in the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing experienced a malfunction and tumbled down a flight of stairs, an event captured on video and shared widely online. The incident occurred as the robot appeared to be distracted by a group of machine cheerleaders performing nearby.
The second annual World Humanoid Robot Games, held from August 22-26, featured 2,056 automated athletes from 16 countries competing in various challenges. However, not all robots demonstrated flawless performance.
The viral clip shows a silver humanoid robot ascending a podium when it swivels its head to observe a cheerleading routine performed by other robots. Dressed in colorful wigs and skirts and holding pom-poms, the cheerleaders were part of the event. The distraction led the ascending robot to trip on the stairs and fall over a railing.
The footage, which garnered over 1.3 million views on X, prompted humorous commentary from social media users. Many joked about the robot's apparent distraction, drawing parallels to human behavior.
This was not the only notable mishap at the games. In another instance, a robot designed for weightlifting dropped a 35-pound barbell during a competition and fell headfirst into a judges' table.
Despite these incidents, the games also showcased significant advancements in robotics. For example, a robot named Lightning completed a 100-meter dash in 9.32 seconds, surpassing Usain Bolt's previous world record of 9.58 seconds. During its run, the robot reached a top speed of approximately 32 miles per hour.
