Robot Falls Down Stairs After Being Distracted by Cheerleaders at Games

A robot participating in the 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing suffered a comical fall after its attention was diverted by a cheerleading squad. The incident occurred as a silver humanoid robot was attempting to descend a podium.

Video of the event shows five robots performing a cheerleading routine, complete with colorful wigs and pom-poms. As the silver robot moved to climb down from the podium, it appeared to fixate on the dancers below. This distraction led to the robot losing its balance and falling headfirst down the stairs. The clip was shared on X and has garnered over 1.2 million views.

This is not the only notable incident at the games. Earlier in the week, a weightlifting robot collapsed onto a judges' table during the final. Footage showed the robot, after attempting to lift a weight, begin to shake, drop the weight, malfunction, and then stumble towards the judges' table before collapsing. Staff quickly removed the robot on a stretcher, and the competition was halted.

However, the games have also seen remarkable achievements. One robot set a new 100-meter sprint record, completing the race in 9.39 seconds, surpassing Usain Bolt's human world record of 9.58 seconds. Other events have included robots performing Cristiano Ronaldo's signature "Siuuu" celebration and participating in synchronized marches during the opening ceremony.

The 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games feature an estimated 2,000 robots from 16 countries, with Chinese teams forming the majority. The competition includes 30 sports-based events, such as weightlifting, gymnastics, and football, alongside 20 task-based events like bricklaying and package handling. These work-scenario tasks are intended to demonstrate potential commercial applications for humanoid robots. Notably, the current edition of the games excludes events involving stairs, ladders, or uneven terrain.
