Public Displays of Affection Linked to Higher Relationship Satisfaction, Study Finds
Researchers discovered a positive correlation between public displays of affection and relationship satisfaction across multiple cultures.
Engaging in public displays of affection (PDA), such as holding hands, hugging, or kissing, is associated with greater relationship satisfaction, according to a study by researchers at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The findings, published in PLOS One, examined the connection between PDA and how content individuals are within their romantic relationships.
The study involved over 400 participants from Indonesia, Nepal, and Poland, aged 18 to 49. Participants were asked about their frequency of engaging in PDA and their overall satisfaction with their relationships. The results indicated a positive correlation between both private and public displays of affection and relationship satisfaction across all three countries.
Researchers noted that cultural norms significantly influence how affection is expressed, particularly in public. Polish participants reported the highest levels of PDA and higher scores for private affection, while Indonesian participants reported the lowest levels of public PDA. Negative attitudes towards public displays of affection were most prevalent in Indonesia and least prevalent in Poland.
Despite cultural differences in expression, the study concluded that displays of romantic affection contribute to improved well-being, reduced stress, greater life satisfaction, and enhanced relationship satisfaction. Nepali participants reported the highest level of relationship satisfaction, followed by Polish participants, with Indonesian participants reporting the lowest.
The study's findings emerge as public displays of affection sometimes draw criticism. Some social media users have expressed negative sentiments about PDA, with one TikTok user stating that seeing it "will literally ruin my day," while another suggested it "should be illegal." This sentiment has also surfaced in conversations in London, where some residents have called for kissing to be banned on the London Underground, citing discomfort with excessive displays.
