Prince Joffrey Velaryon's Troubled Arrival in King's Landing on 'House of the Dragon'

Season 3, Episode 5 of HBO's 'House of the Dragon,' titled "Unbowed and Unbent," introduces Prince Joffrey Velaryon, Rhaenyra Targaryen's eldest surviving son and heir, to King's Landing. His arrival is met with an unexpected delay in reunion with his mother, who appears hesitant to see him.

Joffrey's Parentage and Position

Prince Joffrey is the third son born to Rhaenyra Targaryen during her marriage to Laenor Velaryon, though he was conceived during Rhaenyra's affair with Ser Harwin "Breakbones" Strong. While King Viserys I considered Rhaenyra's sons with Strong to be legitimate, this view was not shared by all in court, including Alicent Hightower, who saw it as grounds to contest Rhaenyra's claim to the Iron Throne. Daemon Targaryen famously killed Vaemond Velaryon for publicly questioning the legitimacy of Rhaenyra's sons.

Following the death of his second-born brother, Lucerys, at the hands of Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar in the Season 1 finale, Rhaenyra sent her younger sons—Joffrey, Aegon, and Viserys—away for their safety. With the subsequent death of Jacaerys in the Battle of the Gullet, Joffrey has now become Rhaenyra's immediate heir, prompting her to summon him to King's Landing.

Rhaenyra's Hesitation and Joffrey's Significance

Rhaenyra's reluctance to meet with Joffrey stems from her unaddressed grief over the loss of her sons, particularly Jacaerys, making Joffrey a painful reminder. More significantly, her rule is challenged by whispers questioning her legitimacy, with some referring to her as the "Queen of Bastards." As Aegon and Viserys are Daemon's biological sons, Joffrey is the last of Rhaenyra's sons with Strong, intensifying her insecurities about her claim to the throne.

Potential Fate in the Books

The fate of Prince Joffrey in the 'House of the Dragon' series remains to be seen, but his presence in King's Landing could foreshadow events from George R.R. Martin's novel 'Fire & Blood.' In the book, Rhaenyra struggles to maintain popular support in King's Landing, leading to an uprising. During this turmoil, a young Joffrey expresses a desire to join the fight on his dragon, Tyraxes. Rhaenyra, fearing further loss, forbids him from flying into battle. However, Joffrey attempts to ride his mother's dragon, Syrax, who rejects him, causing him to fall and sustain fatal injuries. Reports in the book also suggest his body was torn apart by the mob. The series may adapt a version of this tragic storyline, given the current unrest in the capital.
