Pokémon Go Celebrates a Decade of Augmented Reality Adventures
The popular mobile game marks its 10th anniversary, reflecting on its journey and future community focus.
Pokémon Go, the augmented reality mobile game that captivated millions, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Since its launch, the game has aimed to bring people together, encouraging players to explore their surroundings while interacting with virtual Pokémon.
Overcoming Early Challenges
In its early years, Pokémon Go's immense popularity presented significant technical hurdles. "Servers buckled under the strain," according to Michael Steranka, vice president at the game's owner Scopely, leading to widespread connectivity issues. Safety concerns were also raised, with police and safety groups cautioning players against becoming too engrossed in the game to the point of endangering themselves or getting lost.
The COVID-19 pandemic initially impacted the game more severely than others in the video game industry, Steranka noted, due to its reliance on players being outdoors. However, as restrictions eased, the game saw a resurgence as people sought reasons to go outside.
A Shift in Ownership and Future Vision
A notable development in the game's history occurred in 2025 when Scopely acquired developer Niantic for $3.5 billion. Steranka expressed his hope that this acquisition would prove to be a positive change for the game and its community. Looking ahead, the game's focus remains on fostering community, creating lasting memories, and enabling shared family experiences.
"No matter where I was and what phase of my life, Pokémon Go has been there for me," Steranka said, emphasizing the game's ability to adapt to players' lives. "It meets people where they are, at whatever phase of life they're in."
