Online Communities Foster Risky At-Home Cosmetic Procedures, Experts Warn

Hundreds of women are reportedly administering cosmetic treatments like Botox and microneedling at home, often learning techniques from online communities. The subreddit r/DIYaesthetics, which has grown to over 70,000 members, serves as a hub for sharing product recommendations, before-and-after photos, and discussions about at-home cosmetic procedures.

The community's stated aim is to foster DIY and professional skincare enthusiasts for education and self-improvement. However, moderators emphasize that information is shared "at your own risk" and is "not a replacement for licensed medical professionals."

Despite warnings and shared horror stories of botched procedures, including droopy brows, uneven smiles, and misplaced fillers, many participants are motivated by cost savings or maintaining professional results between clinic visits. Some members question the safety line between at-home care and professional treatments, with many opting against procedures like fillers that require professional training due to perceived risks.

Dangers of Self-Administered Procedures

Plastic surgeon Frank Agullo warns that at-home cosmetic procedures carry substantial risks. He highlights filler injections as particularly dangerous due to the presence of numerous arteries in the face. Accidental injection into a blood vessel can lead to tissue death or permanent vision loss, complications that trained professionals mitigate through anatomical awareness and the availability of reversal agents.

"A person who is injecting themselves while sitting in their own bathroom has none of those advantages," Agullo stated. He noted that online-sourced products may be counterfeit, lack FDA approval, or have unknown concentrations, increasing the danger.

Incorrect Botox injection can lead to undesirable outcomes such as drooping eyelids, double vision, or difficulty swallowing. Some users have reported immediate adverse effects like swollen bumps under the skin or unintended fluid retention. Even chemical peels, like glycolic acid treatments, can cause burns and skin damage if not performed correctly.

While procedures like skin boosters and microneedling are considered to have lower risk profiles, the potential for infection, nodules, and permanent scarring remains when performed without sterile techniques.

Sourcing and Risks

Participants in these online communities often discuss methods for obtaining Botox and fillers, using platforms like Telegram, Discord, and Korean search engines. Concerns have been raised about the authenticity, sterility, and proper storage of products obtained through unofficial channels, with experts advising that discounted vials from offshore sellers offer no guarantee of quality or safety. Agullo suggests that legitimate practices incur significant expenses related to sterile supplies, staff, emergency drugs, and follow-up care, contributing to the cost of professional treatments.
