One-Wheeled AI Robot Aims to Revolutionize Property Security
Estonian startup Rollo Robotics is developing the 1Rollo, a single-wheeled autonomous robot designed for cost-effective patrolling of large outdoor areas.
Rollo Robotics, an Estonian startup, has developed a one-wheeled AI security robot named 1Rollo, which it aims to make commercially available in 2027. The company's goal is to offer a lower operating cost for patrolling large properties compared to traditional security vehicles.
The 1Rollo utilizes a self-balancing single-wheel design, standing approximately 43 inches tall and weighing about 100 pounds. A vertically positioned spinning flywheel inside the robot helps maintain its balance, with the system tilting the flywheel to execute turns. This patent-pending technology, combined with a narrow footprint, allows the robot to navigate spaces where wider vehicles might struggle.
Equipped with a 360-degree computer vision system and Real-Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK GNSS) positioning for precise navigation, the 1Rollo follows mapped routes. Its artificial intelligence analyzes the surroundings for anomalies. Upon detecting unusual activity, it can alert a human operator via Wi-Fi or a 4G/5G connection. Operators can then review the situation and decide on the appropriate response, potentially speaking to individuals via the robot's built-in microphone and speaker before dispatching a human guard.
The robot has a listed top speed of 19 mph and a battery life of up to eight hours per charge, with autonomous wireless charging capabilities. Rollo Robotics designed the platform to support additional equipment, such as thermal cameras for low-light conditions, pan-tilt-zoom cameras for distant observation, night vision, and RFID systems, allowing for customization based on specific property needs.
Rollo Robotics plans to offer 1Rollo through a Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) model, where customers subscribe to the service. This model would include hardware, software updates, and support, potentially reducing upfront equipment costs and simplifying maintenance and upgrades. The company aims for this subscription model to lower overall operating expenses compared to relying solely on human security personnel.
Concerns regarding the cybersecurity of connected robots are being addressed. Rollo Robotics states that the platform can be adapted for various uses, but customers are advised to inquire about data encryption, account protection, storage policies, and security update delivery. The company's CEO and co-founder, Sander Sebastian Agur, indicated the robot's potential for patrolling campuses, industrial sites, and other large outdoor areas.
While the 1Rollo is still a functional prototype, its planned commercial launch in 2027 suggests a future where autonomous robots may play a more significant role in property security. However, the success of such technologies also depends on their ability to demonstrate consistent performance in real-world conditions, including varied weather and complex environments, and to offer clear cost benefits to businesses.
