Nvidia, a prominent computer chip company, announced its intention to acquire the artificial intelligence software platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion. The acquisition is expected to bolster Nvidia's position in the rapidly growing AI sector.

In a blog post on Thursday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that Hugging Face is utilized by more than 18 million developers, researchers, and creators. The platform hosts over 3 million models, 500,000 data sets, and 1 million applications, serving more than 200,000 companies.

Nvidia has committed to maintaining Hugging Face as an open platform. Huang emphasized that developers will retain the freedom to choose their preferred models, frameworks, cloud providers, inference service providers, and computing platforms. He further clarified that Nvidia's compute infrastructure will not be a prerequisite for building on or deploying through Hugging Face. The platform will continue to support open-source and open-weight models, as well as multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment.

Nvidia itself has a significant presence on Hugging Face, having released more than 500 models and over 250 open datasets on the platform. The company's high-end chips have become foundational components for AI development, contributing to Nvidia's consistent outperformance of Wall Street expectations.

The artificial intelligence industry has seen substantial investment, with trillions of dollars being spent on technology development. However, this growth is accompanied by increasing scrutiny regarding the justification of such expenditures and concerns about the environmental impact of data centers and the potential for widespread job displacement due to AI adoption.
