New T-Shirt Claims to Stay Fresh for 30 Days Without Washing

A new T-shirt developed by the startup Hercleon claims to remain fresh and odor-free for up to 30 days without requiring washing. The HercShirt V5.0 utilizes what the company describes as "seven odor-fighting elements" woven directly into the fabric, including copper and silver, known for their antimicrobial properties.

These metals are intended to kill odor-causing bacteria that thrive on sweat and dead skin cells. The fabric also incorporates volcanic ash, which has porous minerals that absorb smells, similar to activated charcoal. The company states that these components work together to neutralize the bacteria and volatile compounds that create body odor.

Hercleon offers the HercShirt in three tiers: a "Budget" version for three days of freshness, a "Standard" version for two weeks, and the "Max" option for 30 days. The "Max" shirt is priced at $79.

The invention is the creation of Wenceslaus Muenyi, who was inspired to develop odor-resistant fabric after experiencing unpleasant smells from his clothes during travel. The underlying technology, dubbed "HercFiber," aims to prevent bad smells by targeting the microbes that break down sweat and skin cells.

According to Muenyi, research, such as studies from the University of Southampton, has demonstrated the effectiveness of copper in destroying bacteria. Hospitals and public facilities already utilize copper alloys in touch surfaces to reduce infection spread. The shirt also includes zinc to neutralize sulfurous compounds found in stress sweat, and two proprietary elements designed to tackle hormonal and ammonia-based odors.

However, Hercleon acknowledges that the shirt is not a substitute for personal hygiene and will not alter the body's natural scent. The fabric also does not clean itself, meaning dirt and stains will still accumulate if not properly cared for.

The HercShirt project has garnered significant interest on Kickstarter, raising over $272,000 from more than 1,740 backers. The shirt is currently available in black, with navy blue planned if the crowdfunding campaign reaches an additional $30,000 goal.
