New Prime Video Series 'Sterling Point' Is an Original Creation, Not a Book Adaptation

Prime Video's new young adult series, 'Sterling Point,' is an original story and not based on a pre-existing book, according to series creator Megan Park.

"Nope! Unlike fellow Prime Video titles We Were Liars and Off Campus, Sterling Point is an original series, and is not based on a book," Park stated in an interview with DECIDER. She noted that despite the common trend of book-to-TV adaptations on the streaming platform, 'Sterling Point' stands apart as a unique creation.

Park shared that she encountered many comments from viewers asking about the source material. "I know, it’s so funny. I saw so many comments people were sending me. They’re like, ‘What book is this based on?'" she recalled.

The series centers on 17-year-old twins Annie and Connor Jacobson, who live in New York City with their adoptive father. Their lives take an unexpected turn when they inherit their estranged grandfather's island in Canada. Upon visiting the island, Annie discovers a hidden secret: another young woman who bears a striking resemblance to her mother, and who turns out to be her adoptive mother's biological daughter.

The inspiration for 'Sterling Point,' Park explained, stemmed from a desire to explore "sisterhood through the lens of nature versus nurture and grief, and how it affects these two young women in very different ways." She aimed to make sisterhood the central "love story" of the show, diverging from the common YA trope that prioritizes romantic relationships.

"To have it be about family and sisterhood while still having like all the juicy romance that you want out of a YA show, that was a really fun challenge to take on," Park said.

Park also expressed gratitude for the collaborative team behind the series, including executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known for their work on "The OC" and "Gossip Girl," and Margot Robbie's production company, LuckyChap. She highlighted the invaluable mentorship from Schwartz and Savage, who provided guidance on various aspects of production, from the writer's room to post-production. Park praised LuckyChap for their artist-friendly approach and their commitment to protecting the creative vision of the show, having previously worked with them on her 2024 film "My Old Ass."

All eight episodes of 'Sterling Point' were released on Prime Video on Wednesday, August 5.
