Netflix's AI Gene Wilder Voice in Willy Wonka Series Sparks Fan Backlash
Viewers criticize the use of artificial intelligence to recreate the late actor's voice for a new reality show, deeming it a disrespectful 'takeover'.
Netflix is facing criticism from fans over the use of artificial intelligence to recreate the voice of the late Gene Wilder for its new reality series, "Wonka's The Golden Ticket." The series features 12 contestants competing in challenges within a recreation of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, inspired by the iconic film and Roald Dahl's book.
Gene Wilder, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 83, is celebrated for his memorable portrayal of Willy Wonka in the 1971 film. The show's producers have partnered with AI audio firm ElevenLabs to generate a voice for the character that mimics Wilder's. Gene Wilder's estate has reportedly given its approval for the use of his voice in the series, a practice that has also been employed for other deceased actors such as Judy Garland and Burt Reynolds.
However, the announcement and subsequent trailer release have triggered a strong negative reaction on social media platforms. Many fans have expressed dismay, with comments on X (formerly Twitter) criticizing Netflix for what they perceive as a "ruining" of beloved cinematic characters and films through AI technology. Some viewers have described the AI-generated voice as a "plastic substitute" and an "obscenity."
This development follows a broader trend in Hollywood where AI is increasingly being utilized to replicate voices and likenesses of actors. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) highlighted concerns surrounding AI's impact on the industry, leading to strikes in 2023. At the time, some performers reported having their likenesses scanned on sets without clear explanations of future usage, fueling anxieties about job displacement and the ethical implications of AI in creative fields.
In a statement shared with Variety, Karen B. Wilder, Gene's wife, expressed her delight that the series celebrates the "warmth and imagination" he brought to the role, aiming to introduce his magic to a new generation. Despite the estate's approval, the fan outcry underscores a significant debate within the entertainment industry regarding the ethical boundaries and creative integrity of using AI to revive the performances of deceased actors.
