Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's AI Startup for $587 Million

Netflix has acquired Ben Affleck's artificial intelligence company, InterPositive, for $587 million in a move to bolster its visual effects capabilities. The deal, finalized in March, integrates InterPositive's AI model as an in-house post-production engine for Netflix.

Affleck, who founded the AI film-tech company in 2022, will join Netflix as a senior advisor, along with his entire team. The acquisition emphasizes Netflix's commitment to "creator-led innovation that keeps filmmakers at the center of the process," according to the company's prior statements. The streaming service indicated that the new tools are intended to expand creative freedom rather than replace the contributions of writers, directors, actors, and crews.

InterPositive's technology was developed through intensive research and development, focusing on an AI model that understands visual logic and editorial consistency while adhering to cinematic rules. Affleck stated that his work on the proprietary dataset aimed to capture the nuances of a full production set. He observed the rise of AI in film production in recent years and recognized the limitations of existing models, underscoring the importance of human judgment in storytelling.

Netflix has already incorporated generative AI into its production processes, with approximately 300 programs utilizing the technology. The company plans to leverage InterPositive's AI to streamline filmmaking, aligning with its stated goal of supporting human creativity. Bela Bajaria, Netflix chief content officer, previously stated that new tools should augment, not constrain or replace, the work of creative professionals.
