Myspace Set for Relaunch as Owners Confirm Plans to Revive Social Network

Myspace, the social networking pioneer that once dominated the internet, is slated for a relaunch, according to its current owners. Brothers Chris and Tim Vanderhook, who purchased the platform in 2011 for $35 million, confirmed their plans in a new documentary titled "Myspace."

"We still own Myspace," Tim Vanderhook stated in the documentary, as reported by People. "We are stewards of the Myspace brand at this point, and we are going to relaunch Myspace. We're just waiting for the right time to do it."

The Vanderhook brothers did not provide a specific launch date, a development timeline, or details about which classic features might be reinstated. The announcement has generated buzz among those who recall customizing profiles and curating friend lists on the platform.

Myspace was launched in 2003 by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe, rapidly ascending to become the world's largest social network before being surpassed by Facebook in 2008. For a generation, it served as a primary digital space for self-expression and connection, notable for features such as the public "Top 8" friend rankings and profile music players.

While the platform has remained online, successive ownerships have attempted to rekindle its popularity. After acquiring Myspace in 2011, the Vanderhook brothers spent two years reorienting it as a music-focused service. However, this redesign did not succeed in attracting a significant user base back to the platform.

"We built an entirely new Myspace," Chris Vanderhook explained in the documentary. "We really tried to modernize it, but it was a different company at that point. It wasn't the same Myspace."

Before the Vanderhooks' acquisition, News Corporation bought Myspace for $580 million in 2005. Three years later, it was sold to Specific Media and Justin Timberlake for $35 million. Chris Vanderhook noted that "the minute the deal closed, things just started unraveling. Everything that could go wrong [went] wrong," including the cancellation of advertiser contracts as brands increasingly favored Facebook.

Myspace played a significant role in shaping early online identities and served as a launchpad for artists, including Adele. The singer has credited the platform with boosting her early career after a demo was uploaded by a friend.

Users online have expressed mixed reactions to the news, with some humorously questioning their emotional readiness for features like the "Top 8" list and hoping for a return to the platform's "old-school feel" without algorithmic interference.
