MouthPad Offers Hands-Free Computer Control Via Tongue Movements
Augmental Technologies' custom-fit device allows users to navigate computers and smartphones using tongue or head motions.
San Francisco-based Augmental Technologies has developed the MouthPad, a custom-fit touchpad designed to allow users to control computers, smartphones, and tablets using tongue or head movements. The device, which resembles a slim dental retainer, is positioned inside the mouth and translates subtle movements into cursor control, clicks, scrolling, and swiping.
MouthPad is designed to be a hands-free alternative to traditional mice and trackpads. It connects wirelessly via Bluetooth, eliminating the need for external receivers. The device is compatible with macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android operating systems. Users can adjust settings such as cursor speed, touch sensitivity, and click strength through a companion app, with preferences stored directly on the MouthPad for seamless switching between multiple devices.
The company states that the custom design minimizes interference with speech, allowing users to talk or utilize voice-recognition software while wearing the device. However, Augmental acknowledges that adjustment periods may vary for individuals. Early users and company team members have reported wearing the device for up to 10 hours a day, though comfort is noted to be dependent on individual mouth shape and usage.
The MouthPad weighs approximately 10 grams and is about 1 millimeter thick, constructed from dental resin. Its battery is rated for over seven hours of continuous use, with a full charge taking about 1.5 hours. The device comes with a charging case and USB cable. Augmental also offers a two-device package for users who want a backup.
Acquiring a MouthPad requires an intraoral 3D scan from a dental provider, as each device is custom-fitted. After ordering, users undergo the scanning process, which Augmental states typically costs between $50 and $150. The company then manufactures the device, with shipping taking approximately six months from the receipt of the scan. Following delivery, users complete configuration and a one-time calibration via an online platform.
Augmental suggests MouthPad is suitable for individuals over 18 with sufficient tongue dexterity, good oral health, and no ongoing dental treatments. The device has garnered interest from both individuals seeking assistive technology and professionals looking for hands-free control options, with over 6,300 people on the waitlist.
Cleaning the MouthPad involves hand washing with soap and water before and after each use. Users can drink water while wearing the device but are advised to remove it before eating, drinking other beverages, or sleeping. The company warns that hot liquids can affect the fit and that biting or chewing the device can cause damage.
The MouthPad is priced at $1,400 for a single custom-fit device, with a two-device package available for $1,900. The cost of the dental scan is separate, and the device is not currently covered by insurance or HSA/FSA funds. Augmental currently ships only to addresses within the United States.
Beyond the MouthPad, Augmental is developing Vox, a wearable microphone designed to detect quiet speech through body vibrations, envisioning a future where Vox handles dictation alongside MouthPad's cursor control.
