Meta Introduces Subscription for AI Glasses Feature

Meta is implementing a paywall for a feature on its AI-powered smart glasses, requiring users to pay a monthly subscription to access full functionality. The "Conversation Focus" feature, designed to enhance audio clarity by utilizing the glasses' microphones, will be capped at three hours of free use per month. Users exceeding this limit will have to wait for the monthly allowance to reset or subscribe to the Meta One service.

The company stated this move is part of ongoing experiments to test subscription models for specific features, while keeping core services accessible without charge. Meta first revealed plans in January to trial premium subscriptions across its platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and later confirmed these tests would encompass expanded AI functionalities for its smart glasses.

Despite the new subscription requirement for "Conversation Focus," Meta clarified that other built-in AI features, such as live translation and its voice assistant, will remain free for all glasses owners. The Meta One subscription is currently available only in select countries and is not offered in the UK.

Some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the paywall. One user noted that "Putting Conversation Focus behind a paywall feels wrong" and indicated a willingness to subscribe to Meta One only if it provided unlimited access to features.
