Meta Faces Backlash Over AI Image Tool Using Instagram Profile Pictures
Privacy advocates criticize the Muse Image tool for potentially generating images of users without explicit consent.
Meta is facing criticism over its new AI image generation tool, Muse Image, which allows users to create pictures using others' public Instagram profile photos. The tool, accessible through the Meta AI app, web browser, WhatsApp, and Instagram Stories for U.S. users, has drawn concern from privacy advocates who argue it could lead to misuse.
Donald Campbell, advocacy director at tech justice non-profit Foxglove, described the tool as an "obvious recipe for disaster," pointing to previous harms caused by non-consensual AI-altered images. He questioned the decision to facilitate "more of this creepy image manipulation."
The feature is expected to face increased scrutiny amid growing concerns about AI-generated imagery. Regulators and campaigners have already raised alarms, with Ofcom investigating X over its role in distributing non-consensual AI-altered images. Privacy International also voiced criticism, stating that AI companies appear to be treating users' images and data as exploitable material. One user on X expressed concern that involving real users in generated photos without explicit consent creates a "privacy landmine."
Meta has stated that users can opt out of their images being used, even if they have a public account. A dedicated setting, separate from general account privacy controls, allows users to disable this feature. To opt out, users must navigate to Instagram's settings, select "Sharing and Reuse," and disable the option to "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta" for posts and reels.
